Stock Market Crash

Women in the 1920’s A new era evolved in the 1920’s, a new style of women emerged with it. In the â€Å"Roaring Twenties† many women converted their lifestyle of being home makers who were in charge of cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children to women with short dresses, bob cut hair doos, a cigarette in her mouth and a drink in her hand. This new style of women who emerged with an older prositional style of dress became known as flappers. These women not only changed their appearance and mind set but brought changes to society, the economy, and the role of a typically women. In the rebellious era of the 1920’s some young women began to declare their independence from the male figures in their life, these women were known as the flappers. A flapper was an emancipated young woman who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes of the day. (McDougal 2003) Women in years before were very conservative, wearing ankle-length dresses, following orders f rom men, and their only job would be house cleaning and taking care of the children. These standards were not those of a flapper, flappers wanted to be viewed as equal to men.Flappers did this by shortening their skirts to 1 inch above the knee, cutting their hair into bob cuts, smoke and drinking in public, talking openly about sex, swearing, binding their bodies to appear thinner, and buying make up. By wearing lipstick, rouge, and eye shadow, flappers resembled prostitutes to an older generation (Parker). Against many people’s views at the time, the flappers did not do all these crazy thing in order to get attention but to prove a point that women are just as free as men and want to be treated as such. â€Å"It is an injustice to both parents and child to bring an unwelcome baby into the world. (Dearborn, 88) This is the views many women had during the 1920’s, before it was socially accepted to use birth control. In decades before 1920 the birth rate had begun to d ecline but in the 1920’s the number of child being born dropped drastically due to the use of contraceptives and information of birth control. This decline was an after mass of Margaret Sanger opening the first birth control clinic in the United States and founding the American Birth Control League in 1921. (McDougal 2003) With birth control becoming socially accepted, women in the 1920’s took one more tep forward by going against the norm and began dating. Before when women were beginning to have the mindset of marriage they were â€Å"courted† by men, this means that men only pursued women they intended on marrying. When women began dating this opened the door for more sexual freedom to both men and women which was social unaccepted and unheard of by many people of the older generations which then caused chaos within the home life of the young flapper women. New opportunities arose for women in the 1920’s when women decided to leave the home maker posit ion and step out into the real world by getting a paying job.The ambitious women who went against the odds to go look for a job would get positions such as teachers, nurses, librarians, typists, clerks, and secretaries. By the end of the decade almost 10 million women were earning wages. This outraged men by making them believe that women would begin getting jobs over the men. Though women did not earn nearly as much as men during that time period, it was a big step in history for women to leave the home and start the evolution of working for money.

“Freeze!” – Creative Writing

The loaded fork stopped short of the man's mouth. His eyes scanned the room to find out where the shout came from, his eyes followed to the door of the room and stopped. There in the doorway he could make out four officers, guns ready should he move unexpectedly. â€Å"Put your hands where we can see them!† A moment passed as the man wondered whether or not to eat his last forkful before doing as he was told. He thought better of it and put the fork, still loaded on to his plate. Slowly he raised his arms in the air. Officers streamed into the cramped room, surrounding the man there were as many as could fit with space enough to raise a gun. Some officers were what seemed to be too close to the table, but they could not retreat for the officers behind them. One man passed out from the sight, he was dragged out before he caused a commotion. The seated man smiled at the officer's weakness and followed his limp body out of the room with his eyes. There continued a small bustle as the man was arrested, read his rights, cuffed, masked and shackled. He was walked out of the room, up the flight of stairs that led from the basement flat and out in to the street, where he could see how important he was. Squad cars, and two SWAT vans littered the already dark street. The man could just make out the head of the police department sat comfortably in his black, government car. The man was shoved into the back of an armoured van which already contained three well built men. They were fully equipped with batons and cattle prods. The man decided it best to sit quietly and enjoyed the ride in the windowless van. He shut his eyes and dreamed as he swayed with the jolts the dirt road gave the van. What seemed like hours had passed when the van finally stopped. A minute later, the doors opened and the man was pulled out, still cuffed, masked and shackled. He was escorted into a large important looking building filled with blue uniformed men. The man was led through a maze of corridors and pass checks. They came to a narrow, brightly lit, warm corridor with sound proofed walls and bullet-proof Perspex panels and doors that opened in on to neat holding cells. He was taken down to the last cell on the left, even though all the other nine cells were empty. His cuffs and mask were taken off but they left the shackles, he was politely asked to step inside the cell. He thanked the two officers that had been left with him and walked into the cell. The door was locked behind him. The officers out of duty asked if he wanted anything. â€Å"I'm a bit hungry.† The blood drained from the younger officer's face. â€Å"I was wondering if I could finish my meal?† From the look on their faces he could tell the answer was no. â€Å"Maybe I could have a snack, a packet of crisps or something?† Their faces seemed to relax. â€Å"What flavour?† Quested the young officer. â€Å"Bacon if possible.† The man saw the young officer recoil, the older officer seemed better trained and showed no emotion. â€Å"We'll see what we can do.† The older officer stated. â€Å"Thank you,† the man responded, â€Å"By the way, do you know how long I'm going to be here? I mean will I just have to wait for a little bit or will I have more time that I could waste sleeping or something?† â€Å"We don't know. Do what you see fit.† The older officer motioned the younger officer to follow and they walked out of the man's view. The man settled down and took in his surroundings. Three white walls and one Perspex panel and door held him captive. There was a smooth cot bed made up too perfection with cream blankets and sheets. A steel toilet stood quietly in the corner with a small matching basin next to it. Nothing else furnished the room. The man sat down on the floor and leaned against the cot. With the cool metal side of it in his back he knew he would not be comfortable in this position for long, but he was too lazy to move yet. The man shut his eyes and began to dream. His dreams were plagued by food for he was hungry. He had been interrupted during his dinner and so his belly was not full or content. He dreamed of a starter of soft Cornish crackers, smothered with liver pà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½tà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½. For the main course a beautifully cooked meat pie, soaked in gravy with a very small salad on the side. For dessert a tray of mince pies. He always wondered why they never actually had any real mince in them but even so he delighted in eating them, just for their name. Just as he finished his first mince pie and was about to reach out for another, a soft knocking on the door interrupted him. He opened his eyes to the older officer standing outside the cell staring at him. The man stood and stepped forward towards the glass. The officer stepped back and from his pocket produced a shiny packet. â€Å"I only have roast chicken flavour left.† The man looked at the officer puzzled. â€Å"It must have been confiscated from a convict, nobody will miss it I assure you.† The officer spoke too quickly. He placed the packet in the food tray on the floor and slid it shut so that the drawer's content was now on the inside of the cell. The man picked it up. â€Å"Thank you very much. I wasn't expecting anything at all. Thank you again.† The man sat on the cot and proceeded to open the packet of crisps. He placed the bag close to his face and smelled its contents. He looked back at the glass and was surprised to see the officer still there. He smiled and pulled out a wafer of potato. As he crunched into it, the officer turned and walked away, the man thought he saw a smile on the officers face but could not be sure. It almost looked as if the officer was longing for something, but the man dismissed that idea, why would an officer long for a packet of crisps? The officer probably was feeling sorry for the man. The man ate half the packet and decided to save the rest for later. He put the packet under the cot pillow. He kicked off his shoes, imitation leather, slid on to his side and drifted off to sleep on the cot. A long while later, he was woken up by a buzzer he could not see. He stood in time to see four officers at his cell. He was led through another maze of corridors and pass checks to a small questioning room. He was sat down at a medium sized wooden table with two chairs, one that he occupied. A large mirror took up the wall opposite where the man sat. He suspected it to be a two-way mirror for obvious reasons. He was left there with the shackles clinking softly at his ankles. Two officers entered around a half hour later. One sat down, the other stood in the shadow near the door. The seated officer placed a Dictaphone on the table, switched it on and stated the date, time and the names of all present in the room. The man was shocked that it had been a full 12 hours since he had been caught. Then it began; the barrage of questions. First they started slowly; his name, age, date of birth, height, weight and so on. They gave him time to answer each question fully and only asked another when he looked as if he had nothing more to say. Then they began to speed up. â€Å"When was the last time he had food?† He told of the crisps, interrupting they asked what flavour. â€Å"Roast Chicken.† â€Å"Who gave them to you?† â€Å"Another officer, I don't know his name.† â€Å"Do we look stupid?† The man did not answer. â€Å"No officer is allowed to give you food.† â€Å"But-† â€Å"No officer would give you chicken flavour crisps.† The man put his head down as in defeat. â€Å"And before that? What was the next before last thing you ate?† â€Å"Lunch.† â€Å"Consisting of?† â€Å"Meat.† The man had raised his head to look the officer in the face before he had replied. A look clouded both officers' faces. The seated officer rose and motioned the other to sit. This officer was dressed differently, for one she wore a dark blue skirt rather than trousers. Instead of the usual white shirt the men wore, she wore a light blue blouse and a small tailored dark blue waistcoat. â€Å"This, † motioned the now standing officer, â€Å"is officer Ali, first name Aliya. She is very familiar with your type of problem.† â€Å"Hello.† A quiet, slightly shaky voice indicated she was not as good as her introduction. â€Å"Hello Miss.† The man said politely. â€Å"Address the officer properly.† â€Å"Nice to meet you officer Ali.† â€Å"That's okay officer. Let the man relax.† The standing officer grunted indignantly and walked towards the door to lean against the wall near the light switch. â€Å"Okay. Let's start.† The young lady produced a bunch of papers from a small briefcase by her feet. â€Å"These are just a few character tests I need you do to so that I can help you. Would you mind taking one of these?† She looked at the officer for approval. He nodded. â€Å"Not at all officer. I know I'm sick and need help. But I haven't the will power.† The man looked genuine in his feelings. â€Å"Okay. Right. Okay. How often do you eat meat?† She laboured over the last word, as if it was uncommon. â€Å"Not very often only when I can find some. Then I tend to gorge myself on it.† â€Å"And where do you get your†¦meat?† She fuddled over the word again â€Å"An out of town butcher† The man said flatly. â€Å"Really?† She raised her eyebrows in surprise. She suspected he was lying. â€Å"No. I catch it myself. I stalk them and then kill them with a knife, that way not bullets or poison spoils it.† He had lied and had thought better of it to tell he truth. He put his head down again in shame. â€Å"Spoils it?† Her eyebrows now knit together in curios â€Å"The taste is better if there isn't all that stuff.† He was a little cautious of his answers but he was trying to be as honest as he could, he wanted help and they could only help him if they knew everything. â€Å"Ok. Do you think you could ever stop†¦doing what you are doing?† She struggled again to ask these questions. This was new to her, she had only been doing this for about a month and this was the first man who was this honest. The rest of the offenders usually laid the whole way through. She knew why; they had heard of what would happen to them if they were convicted. â€Å"I hope so. I can go without it for long, weeks at a time but then a craving for it plagues my mind and body.† He looked for some kind of reaction in here eyes. Another inquisitive look knotted hey eyebrows together. â€Å"You have withdrawal symptoms?† â€Å"Yes. I start, dreaming. I'm a good cook. I dream up dishes that I can make. I can make anything out of any bit of meat.† He sounded slightly proud of himself. But then he remembered why he was there and retreated back to feeling sorry for himself. â€Å"Can I ask why you call it meat? Not flesh, or food?† â€Å"If you think of it as what it really is, then you begin to feel guilty. I don't like feeling bad, so I don't think of them as anything important, only as bits of meat that taste nice.† It was an answer given matter-of-factly. â€Å"If we put you on a diet of only vegetables would you be able to survive?† She looked for a way out for him, she felt sorry for him. â€Å"Yes of course, I wouldn't like it though.† This was not going well for the man. She asked the final question that she knew would decide his fate. She wished he would answer correctly but she could give no kind of indication to him as to what his answer should be. â€Å"If you had the chance to have meat again after this interview would you take it?† A slight pause as the man put his head down and answered n a small voice. â€Å"Yes.† Suddenly the door burst in and armed guards rushed into the small room. In desperation the man realised that the rumours of what happened to people like him were true and that he had just sealed his fate. â€Å"I mean no, I wouldn't. I wouldn't! I promise, no, no I wouldn't.† He screamed apologetically, begging for forgiveness and promising that he would be good. He sounded like a little boy begging his parents for one more chance after doing something wrong and knowing he would be punished. The office seated stood up and walked out of the room. She looked back at the man with sympathy but she knew she could do nothing. He had answered wrong. He was dragged out of the room by guards who had been waiting outside the door. â€Å"No! I promise, never again!† The man was taken to a cell not too far from the questioning room. He cried and screamed, kicked and bit. He tried everything to free himself. It didn't work. He was thrown into a small cell, 4 foot by 3. Blood was spattered on the walls and the man shook as he realised in his mind what was actually going to happen. Three small flaps near the floor opposite the now bolted steel door snapped open. Out of them came a stream of fat brown rats. They circled him, ring upon ring formed round him, the man stood still, his eyes racing round to each small set of beady eyes. Their bright yellow teeth were visible and chattered every so often, all daring each other to jump first. A silent sign made them all pounce on him. He shrieked and tried to pull them off. They bit through his shirt, on his bare arms and at his legs. Many drew blood on their first bite. These were well-trained assassins. They were hungry and wanted meat. The man's shoes had been kicked during the scrap and now the rats bit at his socks. The man fell on the floor and they swarmed him. Wave upon wave of pain coursed through the man. They were biting all over his body, regardless of whether it was clothed or not. If it were clothed, they would slash an opening and clamber through to the soft skin underneath. The rats were in his shirt, in his trousers biting at everything. The man continued to fight them off, but there were just too many. He kept screaming until one rat dared to jump into in and bite his tongue. The man bit down as hard as he could. Half the rat fell off of him, tail still twitching. He spat the other half out and spat out the rodent's blood, it mingled with his own from the bite on the tip of his tongue. He stopped screaming but when a rat latched on to his nose he yelped in pain. It's tail swung into his mouth and he bit it off accidentally swallowing it. Another rat bit down into the flesh between his thumb and fore finger, he tried to shake it off but the momentum plus the weight of the rat caused the flesh to rip and the rat to fly off with part of the man in it's mouth. It dropped the meat and attacked him again on his other hand hoping for a larger piece. Rats on the man's belly ripped and clawed their way past the skin, getting to the soft meat beneath it. Five especially fat rats tunnelled through the man into his abdomen and chest. The man could not breathe, as his lungs were half eaten. He coughed up blood and in it was a bit of a rat's tail. The man retched but nothing came up as his stomach was on the floor in front of him. Eventually the man ceased to move. His efforts for survival had been futile. The rats continued their meal until all that was left was the bones of a man. When they were full they sat in the corners of the room letting the still-hungry rats gorge till they themselves could eat no more. Hours passed and slowly the rats scampered back to their homes on the other side of the flaps, where more food was. When every rat had gone, two officers shut the flaps, opened the door and collected the remains. They remarked about how efficient the rats were getting, this one had died within two hours of being locked in. The other remarked the time was too short and that every non-vegetarian should endure the most torture they could receive before dying. They both agreed that all meat eaters should be put to death and that this was the most fitting way for it too be done but they still continued to argue over how long it should last. Their argument lasted all the way to the dump where they threw the filled bin liners into a newly dug pit, big enough for thirty bags or so. By then they had grown tired of the discussion and were now debating whether to go to the new veggie-restaurant, or go to the usual veggie noodle bar for lunch.

Excellent grammar is every tyro's dream. And, precisely, perfect grammar is crucial to every written document. However, some schools under-emphasized the study of grammar especially in vocational, technical, or mechanical areas, but, some also over-emphasized the same because of the need to be precise and accurate. For example, in the Law school or in journalism schools where accuracy is necessary. Consistently, to be articulate is also my aspiration and the challenge that drives me on. 4. I am very thorough with my work in life and in school. But, I am not necessarily the first to finish and turn a very accurate work. Nonetheless, I take my time and usually turn in a polished final product. I have done editing which is also called revising. It is centered on surface quality. Some would call it technicality of the written piece. Others would say it is more of corrections on the presentation rather than the content. It is commonly known as enhancement.

Marketing plan Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Marketing plan - Assignment Example We will introduce the new notebook, The Book-It Note, with penetration pricing and formidable advertising. We will also employ extensive distribution, which will translate to increased revenue and growth rate. Those over 31 years of age purchase relatively over 50 percent of all the notebooks as shown in the table above. Purchase of notebooks is also supposed to be dependent on gender. Normally, women purchase notebooks more than men do. However, the trend changes when the group in question is around 35 years of age or older. The current generation of young men is used to smartphone apps more than ladies are meaning that they may not be a very good set of The Book-It Note customers. For female student customers, their attention to aesthetic may require that we make the notebook a little appealing with vibrant colors. However, The Book-It Note is generally plain and neat eliminating any distractions while using it. Within the consumer market, we identify middle and upper-income professionals who normally have very tight schedules and their professions demand that they do not forget things they have discussed throughout the day or worse still, forget future meetings. The intricacy involved in using phones to record notes or noting down future appointments plus the possibility that the phone discharges or may lose data require more ‘tangible’ places to note down important information. The classical notebook is normally the best for this purpose. To reach this market, we will employ sales and marketing agents who will be visiting people in their offices and informing them of our innovative

Routine CT scanning protocols Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Routine CT scanning protocols - Essay Example The protocols given below are used in the Department of Radiology and Molecular Imaging in king Abdul Aziz Hospital (KAH) in Saudi and in Sir Charles Gardean Hospital (SCGH) in Perth, WA. A 64-slice Siemens multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) was recently introduced in KAH and is used for all CT procedures, including routine procedures. SCGH also has a 64-slice GE, which is used for all CT procedures. In any x-ray system, the energy of the x-ray beam depends on its tube potential (kVp). Changes in kVp results in changes in radiation dose, image noise and image contrast. Radiation dose can be reduced up to 30% if kVp is reduced from 120 to 100. In addition, lowering the kVp to 100 during CTA for PE improves visualization of sub segmental arteries (Kubo et al 2008). A study by Hausleiter et al 2006, showed that in a 64-slice CT cardiac procedure, a 100 kV protocol used instead of a 120 kV protocol along with an ECG gated technique, resulted in a 64% reduction in the effective dose. In liver imaging, 120 kVp is suitable and usually preferred than 140 kVp in order to reduce patient dose. Although it is said that that by reducing the kVp the image noise increases, the process leads to the improvement of tissue contrast (Laghi 2007). Kim et al 2009,  in their study, aimed to assess the effect on image quality and radiation dose with low-kilovoltage protocols by chest multidetector computed tomography (CT) examinations in adults.   The study included 210 patients (83 women and 127 men with a mean age of 56.1 years). These patients were randomly assigned to one of three protocol groups: (1) protocol A (the standard protocol) with 120 kilovolt (peak) (kV[p]) and 100 effective milliampere-second (eff mA s); (2) protocol B, with 100 kV (p) and 140 eff mA s; and (3) protocol C, with 80 kV(p) and 180 eff mA s. Each group had 70 patients. A marginal

Enterpreneurship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Enterpreneurship - Essay Example An entrepreneurial mind is very innovative, and always comes up with new ideas of ventures which are thoughtfully planned. Entrepreneurs come up with ways of utilizing the available resources despite how few they may be, with the aim of making a profit. Uncertainty is a major trait of entrepreneurship since it entails coming up with something new which has not been existing in the market. Consequently, this means that as entrepreneur one has to be able to create market for what he has introduced, since he has the sole responsibility of ensuring business growth (McFadzean, O'Laughlin & Shaw, 2005, p. 350). Successful entrepreneurs have been found to be always positive as being negative may lead to the fail of a business opportunity. From the above understanding of entrepreneurship, I believe that I possess a few traits of an entrepreneur. I was able to exploit a few ideas while in college from which I was able to generate a small amount of capital. Particularly, since there was a lot of demand for photocopying services within the collage, I was able to start a photocopying shop (Parboteeah, 2000, p. 28). Though there were numerous shops within the college offering similar services, I did not give up. I aimed at locating the shop in a strategic position which was convenient and easily accessible to the students. The business lasted for a period of two years; when I moved out of that environment, on completion of my studies in search of greater opportunities (McFadzean, O'Laughlin & Shaw, 2005, p. 358). Despite the fact that the business was not able to generate a remarkable amount of profit, it gave me a significant amount of knowledge in the field of business. According to Parboteeah (2000, p. 32) the key aspect of entrepreneurship is coming up with new ideas, and this is what any business needs in order to grow. Innovation always keeps a company’s products in the market as the company will be able to beat its competitors through new strategies. Without c onstant innovations a company is likely to fail due to changes in technology, as well as market changes. Market changes within a short time hence, it is important for business managers to understand that what interests the market today, might not be of much interest come tomorrow (Johnson, 2001. p. 137). As a result, adding an entrepreneurial mind to a company is very important because the company will be assured of its survival and growth. Starting up a new business has many challenges and it requires one to be persevering, otherwise his whole business idea can be wasted (Parboteeah, 2000, p. 47). We all have weaknesses because we are human, and my biggest weakness is impatience as sometimes I feel like giving up. Also am not very good in multi-tasking since I feel that I have to accomplish one mission before venturing into another one. Moreover, I hate working under pressure because too much work may make me feel discouraged and instill a feeling of despair within me. I have paid for this weakness sometimes, however I have learnt to keep pushing on even when things seem very difficult (McFadzean, O'Laughlin & Shaw, 2005, p. 372). The most important strategy to the success of in business is to cultivate a positive attitude within you (Johnson, 2001. p. 140). Change all the self talk within you to appropriate positive talks that will drive you towards the attainment of your set goals. Focusing particularly on the lack of the ability to work under pressure, this might be due to laziness and the fear of stress. Stress comes as a result of one feeling that he does not have the capability of handling that amount of work. Stevenson, & Lundstrom (2002, p.235) explains that it is possible to overcome this through a change of attitude and putting more focus

The Applicability of Case Study Findings and the Main Components of Research Paper

The Applicability of Case Study Findings and the Main Components of Historical - Research Paper Example There are a number of reasons that can be attributed to this. In the first place, the unique characteristics of the research setting where the case study was carried may be difficult to find in other areas and so applicability of findings in other context becomes challenging (He and Opposs, 2012). Again, most of the variables in case studies have been noted to change very rapidly with time. This is another condition that affects that applicability of case study findings negatively. On historical researches, Gall, Gall and Borg (2007) noted that there are very specific components of these that make them unique from other forms of research. More importantly, the approach to conducting historical research has been said to be an important factor that affects outcomes. To get very accurate outcomes that can be considered applicable to present situations, it is admonished that there will be the extensive use of primary resources of data for historical research. The idea is that using primary sources of data makes it possible to have evidence that justify the occurrence of events in the historical contexts within which the research is performed (Dorn et al., 2013). For example to undertake a historical research on the abolition of slave trade, it will be important to use such primary sources of data such as books or newspaper articles that were produced at the time of the event. Doing so helps in finding the real validity behind the claims that are made in such

How to achive sustainable concrete Dissertation

How to achive sustainable concrete - Dissertation Example Therefore, all human activities should be sustainable such that they ensure correct use of the resources available (without waste) as well as ensuring that the environment is conserved. One such activity that should be sustainable in nature is the production and use of concrete. Concrete has been one of the most important materials in the construction and infrastructure industry for more than 2000 years now (Cement Association of Canada 2004). It has also been considered as an environmental friendly material (Cement Association of Canada 2004). In addition, structures made of concrete are normally durable, dependable and their performance in terms of are usually superior (Cement Association of Canada 2004). The question that now arises is how sustainable concrete is. As compared to steel and aluminium, concrete structures are flexible in design, affordability and environmental friendliness (Cement Association of Canada 2004). ... The research also aims at identifying how certain components of concrete such as cement and aggregate are not sustainable and suggesting ways of making them sustainable. The research will also discuss how these components of concentrate can be made sustainable. 3. PROBLEM STATEMENT Just as earlier mentioned, concrete has been used for construction material since time in memorial, and is considered as one of the most sustainable construction raw materials. It is however, noted that even though it is sustainable some of its aspects such as production of one of its major components, cement, is questionable. Therefore, what is a sustanaible development or product? 3.1 Sustainability In general, sustainability can be taken to mean supporting or keeping a process going. Therefore, the main aim of ensuring that projects, products and processes sustainable is to ensure that all the lives in our plat earth are sustained for a future that is foreseeable. Sustainability is consists of three com ponents; society, environment and economy. Therefore, a sustainable project, process or product must ensure that all the three components of sustainability (society, environment and economy) are maintained balanced and healthy at all times (both now and in future). 3.1.1 Evironmental sustainability It is the destruction of the environment that is driving the world towards adoption of sustainable ways of doing things. Our environment has been deteriorated countless times by countless causes such that the quality of life in the planet both now and in future is questionable. For example, environmental degradation has been blamed for poor health of planet earth and the constant decline of biodiversity. This is

Activity or Working Capital Efficiency Ratios Term Paper

Activity or Working Capital Efficiency Ratios - Term Paper Example Activity ratios are operating efficiency measures, which determine the ability of a company to maximize its output given a certain level of resources. These ratios significantly gauge the asset, investment, and cost management performance of the business entity. Ratios under this category are inventory, creditors’ and debtors’ ratio. The inventory ratio measures the number of days the inventories stay in the company’s distribution center or warehouses. The debtors’ ratio reveals the efficiency of a business organization in collecting its account receivables while creditors’ ratio shows the number of days the company is able to pay its suppliers. Lower numbers are typically preferred in this ratio classification as they signify speed and efficiency of the business organization in dealing with its different transactions.             Appendix 3 shows the working capital efficiency of HR Owen Plc and Antonov Plc. It should be noted that in general, HR Owen is able to boost its efficiency as indicated from the improvement of its inventory and trade creditor ratio. The company is able to reduce the number of days the stocks sit on its warehouse from 84 to 65. HR Owen is also more responsible for its debts it is able to pay its trade creditors in just 12 days. However, HR Owen should still concentrate on its efforts of collecting its receivables from customers. The company reports that it became relatively slower I collecting receivables by three days compared to the 12 days recorded in 2004. The performance of Astronov is again inferior to HR Owen evidenced by its higher debtor’s ratio. The other ratios cannot be computed as the company does not record revenue and cost of sales for the periods considered. Liquidity or solvency ratios are used as measures of the company’s ability to finance its short-term obligations by its cash and near-cash items. Included in these ratios are the current and acid test or quick ratios. Current ratio expresses the â€Å"working capital’ relationship of current assets available to meet the company’s current obligations.†

Cari’s Story Essay Example for Free

Cari’s Story Essay How could an infection in Cari’s nasal passages and pharynx spread into her sinuses? An infection will spread because the pharynx, larynx and sinuses are all connected, so the infection is going to spread to the sinuses and the surrounding areas. What is the cough reflex? Describe the process that Cari’s respiratory system is using to clear her lungs by coughing? The cough reflex is a deep and long inhalation that is followed by the closing the glottis, this causes a strong exhalation that will push the glottis open and sends the air through the respiratory passage. The coughing occurs when a foreign body is in the larynx, trachea or the epiglottis. Cari is coughing because the mucous and fluid buildup in her lungs and her body is to get rid of it. Which structures found in the terminal bronchioles and alveoli normally would protect Cari’s lungs from infectious pathogens and particulate matter? The alveolar macrophage protects her lungs because they wonder around the alveoli space and it collects dust, particles and debris. Cari does smoke and it has caused the cilia in her respiratory passage way to become paralyzed and then it secretes the excess amounts of mucus. The macrophages are sent to the lungs and it gets stuck in the mucus and it can’t fight off the pathogens. How would the resistance of Cari’s airways be affected by excess mucus and fluid in her lung? Cari isn’t getting adequate oxygen because the pressure of fluid and the mucus buildup in her lungs. This is not allowing her lungs to expand so she can get the breath her body needs. The fluid buildup and the pressure are not allowing her oxygen to disperse to the areas it needs. How would Cari’s lung compliance (the effort required to expand the lungs) be altered as her alveoli fill with fluid due to pneumonia? The fluid in her lungs makes it hard to expand because the fluid makes the alveoli sticky and it can’t expand and open. How would fluid in Cari’s lungs affect her total lung capacity? Cari’s lung capacity would go down due to the fact that the air space is being taken up by the fluid in her lungs. How does the elevation of Cari’s respiratory rate alter her minute ventilation? Cari’s respiratory rate will increase her minute ven tilation. Normal blood oxygen saturation levels are greater than 94 percent; Cari’s blood oxygen saturation levels are greater 90 percent at the time of her exam and an initial arterial blood gas analysis done when  she was admitted to the hospital revealed her arterial Po2 was 54mmHg. How do these clinical findings relate to the internal respiration in Cari’s body? Cari’s oxygen saturation level was 90% and the Po2 of mmHg would show that her arteries are having too much oxygen. A normal resting mmHg is 40% and exercises lower Po2level. A normal resting oxygen level is 94%. Which of the symptoms Cari has described are due to the lack of oxygen and reduced oxygen exchange at her tissues? Cari said she is â€Å"panting like a dog† is due from the lack of oxygen and t reduces her oxygen exchange. As Cari’s Pco2 rose, how was the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin affected? The oxygen carrying of hemoglobin volume with the rise of Pco2 will decrease since the Co2 will take O2’s seat. How would you have expected Cari’s decreased Pco2 and alkaline blood pH to have affected her breathing? Cari’s pH and Pco2 will decrease and her rate of breathing will also be decreasing. How would administration of oxygen enhance Cari’s central drive to breathe? Cari would be able to breathe better when oxygen was administered to her. Which anatomical structures in Cari’s respiratory system were initially involved? The structures involved are the trachea, nasal, pharynx, and larynx, and the lungs. Why was Cari plagued with a chronic smoker’s cough? Cari is plagued with a chronic smoker’s cough because she has a 20 year history of smoking. Which damaging effects of tobacco smoke led to Cari’s impaired respiratory defense mechanisms? There are damages to the epithelial with those damages comes the body’s repair process. How did the pneumonia affect Cari’s lung function? Cari’s was having problems getting adequate oxygen, because of the fluid in her lungs. The pneumonia is an infection from bacteria that can affect the body, because of her smoking it made it hard for her lungs to get air.

The Accrington Pals and Strange Meeting

The Accrington Pals and Strange Meeting Compare and contrast the lack of understanding of the realities of war by the women in The Accrington Pals and Strange Meeting. To what extent do these misapprehensions affect the relationships between the male and female characters? The lack of understanding shown by the women in Peter Whelan’s The Accrington Pals and Susan Hill’s Strange Meeting makes the realities of war seem all the more sombre. Consequently, this gives a lugubrious tone to both texts, and I aim to assess the impact this has on the relationships of the characters involved. First and foremost, in Whelan’s The Accrington Pals, signing up was far from readily accepted. The women had good reason to be concerned however, as this play highlights the inevitable decimation of such a vast volunteer base such as the Accrington Pals, part of a branch of many such battalions founded as a result of Kitchener’s call to arms in 1914. The opening of the play begins in Autumn 1914, right at the beginning of the war, where attitudes to it were still largely patriotic and positive. Immediately when May Hassal enters, one of the main characters in Whelan’s play, we get a sense of foreshadowing: she is holding a pair of â€Å"iron scales†, which, although not distinctively stated by Whelan, could tie in with the cold winter morning, and her soon to be exposed cold-heart. This poses the question of why the relationship between May and Tom (a nineteen year old apprentice), is so stale and awkward, and why May has an obvious â€Å"grudge† ag ainst him. This is later revealed to the audience, as May adamantly defends her decision to refuse to join in with the â€Å"send –off† for the soldiers: â€Å"I wouldn’t waste my existence†. This is an early indicator that May did not think profoundly of the celebrations that followed the men’s’ signing up, suggesting she thought of it more as a temporary job for the men than a life-threatening act of bravery. Similarly in Strange Meeting, John Hilliard, the protagonist of the novel, is perplexed at how different his sister Beth is behaving since his return from the front. Beth too fails to understand the severity of the upcoming farewell she will have to say to her brother, and this upsets John, who â€Å"had expected to spend time with her, walking about the beach, to laugh with her, explain things, but she had been busy, going out to lunch with their mother, helping twice a week at parties for soldiers on leave, leading a social lifeâ⠂¬ . This somewhat touching passage has a tone of pathos, and evokes a sense of pity for John, as it reflects his own sister being too busy to spend time with him before he leaves for war. The women in The Accrington Pals feel that the war is changing their men, and this is having a knock-on effect on their relationships, resulting in snide remarks made about them. During a conversation between Bertha, Sarah and Eva in Scene 3, Whelan conveys a sense of detachment of the men from the women as a result of the war: â€Å"They think they’re it, don’t they?† â€Å"You just don’t know them anymore! They even walk different†, â€Å"They look so swaggery† this bitterness that the women are feeling is down to the men’s involvement with the war, but the women don’t understand that the men are actually making the most of their time in Accrington while they still can. Bertha, who says she couldn’t recognise her own father in his uniform (â€Å"I didn’t know him at first†) thinks that the men hold high opinions of themselves, yet after the introduction of Ralph to the scene, soon changes her negative ton e, and instead joins in with the Accrington Carnival, singing a patriotic song with Sarah: â€Å"†¦I hit me bum instead of me drum, I’ve joined the Boys’ Brigade†. This song reflects the innocence about the war at this uncertain time for everyone involved; the effect on the audience however would be quite the opposite, having an almost jovial mood, yet this makes it all the more ironic as obviously it highlights that the women were blissfully unaware of the events to follow their men’s departure. This innocence can also be seen with Hill’s Strange Meeting, where the women thought they were doing the right thing by throwing parties for the soldiers on leave. John Hilliard observes the soldiers’ poor â€Å"shocked and pale faces from the recollection of horrors†, yet the women thought it fitting to take their photographs. As the men stood there â€Å"looking embarrassed†, the women looked â€Å"proud and pleased†, doi ng â€Å"what seemed to them best, they knew nothing better†. By focussing on a jovial image of soldiers on leave, they show a disregard for the hardships of re-adapting to civilian life that the men faced, and this is particularly staggering because it may make these men feel as if they can never integrate back with society, who don’t understand the harsh reality of war. This therefore may permanently affect previously strong relationships as the women who thought they were doing the right thing can never fully cater for the men’s fear-stricken needs. As Whelan’s play progresses, Tom and May’s relationship continues to deteriorate, and May tells Eva that she thinks â€Å"Tom’s a dreamer just like [her] Father was†, subsequently showing that she fails to understand Tom’s motifs for joining up. He is an idealist who believes in a collective good and thinks that everyone has a duty to look after their fellow men. However May cannot see this, and instead holds a bitter outlook of the men of war, failing to comprehend the close bonds that they share, and thinks that they are â€Å"waiting to see you [Tom] stumble, slip back, and be as they are†. In contrast, John Hilliard’s mother in Strange Meeting, Constance Hilliard, shows a complete inability to understand the asperity of war at all. The only way she is able to offer sympathy to John is by fussing, despite him her reminding her â€Å"don’t fuss†, she is merely concerned with physical needs such as hunger (â€Å"you use d to be fond of muscatels and almonds, as a small boy. Mary will bake you plum cakes, of course, they are so much better than anything we could buy†), yet often these soldiers would benefit far greater from support and affection, as found in John’s relationship with David Barton â€Å"I love you John†¦yes. He was amazed at himself†. This seems to reassure John and perhaps side-track his mind from the grim realities around him. In The Accrington Pals, the Boggis family undergo the greatest changes as a result of their involvement in the war. Significantly, the return of Arthur’s pigeon that went with him to France, England’s Glory, has an unexpected and catastrophic effect on Annie. When she acknowledges the bird she is adamant that it is England’s Glory: â€Å"It’s his† It’s England’s glory!† This has an astounding significance, as it is an irrespective of the sacrifice that the men have made. The fact that is returns to the women could be an example of foreshadowing by Whelan that it is literally the glory of England winning the war that will return to them, but nothing more, not their men. The fact that its heart was â€Å"hardly beating† is a further example of foreshadowing that the men’s death is imminent, and Annie is the only one who senses this. It can also link to the relationship between May and Tom, whereby May’s heart à ¢â‚¬Ëœhardly beats’ for Tom, and this is the first time that May begins to realise her feelings for Tom were stronger than she thought. When the bird is drowned and subsequently buried, it is an example of symbolism by Whelan to represent that the relationships in Accrington are dead and will never come alive again. By comparison, in Strange Meeting, Beth’s letter to John reflects the navetà © of not just the women characters but also the civilians back home, who believe the lies being fed to them; â€Å"it seems that things are going well from what we read in the papers, and that you will be back before very long†. This in a sense shows the complete disregard for John’s feelings by Beth, because is aware of the sheer harshness of the war. If John had not have returned, Beth would have been regretful of her letters and felt rather foolish, yet because of his return, she could never be made fully aware of the suffering that John was going through. The reader is left feeling sympathetic for May by the end of The Accrington Pals, as after finally realising her true feelings for Tom, he appears to her in spirit form, and she learns the truth about his whereabouts. She blames herself for what has happened to him. As a result of the war, May begins to feel guilty about being â€Å"cold† to Tom. Upon hearing the supposedly good news about the war, many of the women assemble and march to the town hall to try to discover the truth about the men. This collectivism that these women show is the same attitude that Tom himself would have approved of, however, May declines to take part. Once the women in Whelan’s play finally discover the truth about the decimation of the Pals Battalion, they react very differently from one another; Eva reacts angrily, while May falls into a trance-like state, initially unable to function in her normal way. Right at the end of the play, May begs Eva to read a poem published in the paper. It re flects the pride felt as a result of the deaths of the town’s men, and this is not how May had felt before, thus showing her relationship with Tom and other women, and her attitude, has been changed as a result of the sudden and shocking news of the men’s deaths. Eva is â€Å"forced to continue†, thus showing she doesn’t want reminding of Ralph’s death, and so you could argue that her relationship has been destroyed by the war and her normally open personality has been completely transformed. To conclude, the lack of understanding of the realities of war in The Accrington Pals and Strange Meeting are both painful and upsetting because it ultimately results in relationships never returning to what they were. May’s fractured relationship with Tom is finally healed as a result of the war, yet almost ironically, she only realises her feelings after hearing the news of Tom’s death, and then she consequently becomes more introspective, and loses all of her previously present ambition and her high opinions of herself, along with her hopes for the future. Instead, she resumes her old life of making do. The other women struggle to cope with the news of their men’s death; Annie goes into a hysterical state, and Eva is forced to leave. Obviously this news was completely out of the blue as they were ignorant enough to believe the cover ups found in the Accrington Observer. Many families would write to senior officers and the war office, desperate for news of love d-ones, or to discover the real facts behind a death. An example of this can be seen in Strange Meeting, when David Barton’s mother writes to John Hilliard, desperate for news of her son. The signing up of these men to fight in the war, seen as a â€Å"spontaneous demonstration† by May, led to the catastrophic waste of so many young lives, who, in The Accrington Pals’ case, fell victim to the Battle of the Somme.

Paola Valencia Professor Nanda English 102 13 February 2013 Literary Analysis of â€Å"Soldier’s Home† Inspired by his days of service in the Ambulance Corps during the First World War, Hemingway utilizes his experience to tell the story of a soldier’s struggle to get back home both physically and mentally in his short story â€Å"Soldier’s Home†. Hemingway captivates his readers in a tale of a soldier’s (Harold Krebs) late return home from World War I. Upon his return, Krebs discovers that the life he once knew changed. In fact, his life had changed so drastically that upon his return, Krebs’ life no longer fit in its former place. Ernest Hemingway is often noted for writing stories that seem flat and lifeless but his unadorned prose style nevertheless manages to be extremely suggestive and effective in its plainness. Hemingway manages to give depth to his writing and give it hidden meaning. Hemingway gives his readers the responsibility of interpreting and making a personal connection through a gloomy tone and ironic setting to the story as they g et farther and farther into Krebs' world of despair and the emotions that he is struggling with; allowing readers to go on a more personal journey along with Krebs in discovering his new post war society and the role that he plays in it. The title itself exemplifies Hemingway talents in giving depth and suggestive symbolism to plain text. The title â€Å"Soldier’s Home† implies a hint of foreshadowing to the story. Rather than sounding like a statement to assure the reader that the soldier is happy to be home, Hemingway’s title suggests more of a question: where is this soldier’s home? Did he ever make it home? Does he even have a home to come back to? The title of this short story also sets up t... ...uth about it. Krebs feel nauseas and uncomfortable when lying about his experience. Bound by lies, Krebs forgets his brave and heroic deeds at war. That is the reason Krebs develops a bitter sense towards the war and distaste for everything that has happened to him. By placing his character Krebs back at home after the war, Hemingway is able to set up the post war tone of despair and nostalgia to shows Krebs’ unhappiness of being home from war and difficulty adjusting to society. Krebs is caught somewhere in the mix of his former life, his life in the military, and his new life at home. The â€Å"Soldier's Home† illustrates the misfortune and struggles that of a soldier return home. Hemingway gives his readers the tools in order to interpret the story and make it a more personal connection. He captivates his audience as they are somehow able to relate to this tragedy.

The Poetry of Langston Hughes :: Biography Biographies Essays

The   Poetry of Langston Hughes      Ã‚   Langston Hughes was born at the turn of the century in America.   Hughes spent a rootless childhood moving from place to place with his mother who was separated from his father.   During one year in high school, Hughes spent time with his father in Mexico, a light-skinned man who found an escape from racism in ranching.   With aid from his father, Hughes attended Columbia University, but soon became disgusted with university life and immersed himself in his first love - the poetry and jazz and blues in Harlem.   Hughes supported himself in odd jobs such as nightclub doorman and steward while he traveled to places as remote as West Africa, Italy, and Paris.   During this time Hughes wrote poems that earned him a scholarship to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.   His first book of verse was published in 1926.   In this work, the rhythmic, lyrical nature of his poetry is evident as is his belief that only by staying connected to their African roots could African Americans find understanding.   We see this in Cross, "My old man died in a fine big house / My ma died in a shack. / I wonder where I'm gonna die, / Being neither white nor black?" (Langston 2).        The poems of Langston Hughes share a relationship in that they most typically depict the African American experience in the midst of an oppressive white mainstream culture.   Some of the poems are strident political protests or social criticism, while other depicts Harlem life including poverty, prejudice, hunger, hopelessness, and other themes.   Hughes tried to maintain an artistic detachment despite his deep emotions with respect to the feelings expressed in his poems.   He tried, though unsuccessfully in some poems, to depict the universal while at the same time specifically using African American issues, themes, and speech.   We see this in color, "Wear it / Like a banner / For the proud - / Not like a shroud" (Langston 2).   We can see in this poem that Hughes' work depicts the universal experience of being ostracized or oppressed for what one cannot change, but we also see it is directly targeting the black experience with such conditions.      Hughes' poems often have a musical rhythm to them, as his lyrics typically rhyme in the ABAB CDCD ABAB CDCD scheme.   The music of Harlem, the spirituals of Negro slaves, and other influences like Walt Whitman and W. The Tome is a letter written by Leo to his brother Flavian, which addresses the current scandal within the church. This controversy began with the dishonoring implications of a monk named Eutyches that sparked uproar between church officials concerning the true nature of our Lord. The question of whether the Son of God is divine or human in nature, forced church officials to decide His true essence, while attending the Council of Chalcedonian in the year 451. Providing evidence for the Council, the Tome diminishes the foundation and basis of Eutyches’s argument of â€Å"Two Natures† and offers complete support to Flavian. At the time of its composition, this document was considered an accurate portrayal of the common faith, hence establishing its immense importance to the church.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although Leo’s declaration of the Gospel of God and man in Christ appears to be flawless in its interpretation, the tome proves to be vaguely insufficient considering its sporadic utilization of philosophical speculation. This factor is eroded by the dominatingly persuasive and stressed voice of the piece, which is considered by theologians to be â€Å"a fine specimen of the straightforwardness and clarity of the Latin mind† (359). The Tome proves to be both influenced by and later affecting the once youthful tradition of the Roman Liturgy.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The actual text is written in the form of a response to a previously received letter concerning the Eutyches’s defiance of the integrity of faith. Once considered a presbyter, or wise elder, his status is diminished by the unwavering opinion of Leo. The disgraceful new standing is based on the proposal that Eutyches is exceedingly inconsiderate and pathetically uneducated regarding his views of the church and the nature of Christ. The letter inadvertently accentuates the importance of redefining Christianity as a product of defense. Leo accomplishes this by providing evidence to counter the argument of the opposing force.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Leo’s first argument results from an accusation offered by Eutyches and other heretics, which questions the incarnation of the Word of God. In the defense of Christianity, Leo retorts that it should be apparent to all believers that the obscurity of and response to this query can be resolved in the ritual of Confession, the Holy Scriptures, and most evidently in the Apostles’ Creed, which is reiterated at every mass. Eutyches’s complication with understanding the common faith expands to another topic, through which the Tome’s response results in the affirmation of the human and divine nature of Christ.

Report of Maf 680

MAF 680 REPORT The problem faces by the Delima Enterprise Sdn. Bhd can be solve if the company implement some sort of internal control system in all activities. A system of internal control consists of policies and procedures designed to provide management with reasonable assurance that the company achieves its objectives and goals. Typically, there have three broad objectives in designing an effective internal control system, reliability of financial reporting, efficiency and effectiveness of operations and compliance with laws and regulations.Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is one of the internal control systems that can be implemented by the company. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a set of written instructions that document a routine or repetitive activity followed by an organization. The development and use of SOPs are an integral part of a successful quality system as it provides individuals with the information to perform a job properly, and facilitates consistency in the quality and integrity of a product or end-result.The term â€Å"SOP† may not always be appropriate and terms such as protocols, instructions, worksheets, and laboratory operating procedures may also be used. SOPs will detail the regularly recurring work processes that are to be conducted or followed within an organization. They document the way the activities are to be performed in order to facilitate consistent conformance to technical and quality system requirements and to support data quality. They may describe, for example, fundamental programmatic actions and technical actions such as analytical processes, and processes for maintaining, calibrating, and using equipment.SOPs are intended to be specific to the organization or facility whose activities are described and assist that organization to maintain their quality control and quality assurance processes and ensure compliance with governmental regulations. SOPs should be written and documented properly for easy use and refer. If not, SOPs are of limited value. In addition, the best written SOPs also fail if they are not followed. Therefore, the use of SOPs needs to be reviewed and re- enforced by management, preferably the direct supervisor.Furthermore, the written SOPs should be put in place that is easy to see mostly for individuals who involve directly in the activities. In preparing the SOPs, the company should have a procedure in place for determining what procedures or processes need to be documented first. Those SOPs should then be written by individuals knowledgeable with the activity and the company’s internal structure. For example, in the case of Delima, Puan Balqis or Encik Salam should be the suitable person for this task. The other way is, they can also create a group or team for preparing SOPs.By using SOPs, the Delima should be able to prevent the mistake as well as errors in performing the operations. In terms of sales, for example, the employee will know what to do from the time of receiving orders until producing the invoice even if he or she do have any special skills in that area. Hence, SOPs should be prepared in a simple way, so that, individuals with basic understanding can understand. Another internal control that can be implementing by Delima Enterprise is Segregation of Duties. Segregation of duties is a concept of having more than one person to complete the task.It is basically to have one person handle only one type of task or power. Segregation of duties is critical to effective internal control because it reduces the risk of mistakes and inappropriate actions. It helps fight fraud by discouraging collusion. Example of segregation of duties such as the person who requisitions the purchase of goods or services should not be the person who approves the purchase. Regarding the Delima case, Puan Hashimah is responsible for approval of employee’s timesheet as well as payment of salaries.Supposedly, she only given the approval of the timesheet only, and the payment should be done by other person such as human resource personnel. So, when Delima implementing a proper internal control system as mention above, its can prevents and avoid any major mistake happens. Because, SOPs for example, it has given the instruction about the procedures to be done. Also, when implementing the segregation of duties or powers it can prevent a person from able to do frauds because the concept of one person with one task only AGMCORPORATE GOVERNANCE †¢Cik Amy do not have enoughknowledge and experience inher field of work. †¢ Company should provideguidance and training to newemployees. †¢ Management should hiresomeone that is capable indoing his work. Historic overview

The story of the Ritz-Carlton begins with Swiss hotelier Cesar Ritz who was well known in the hotel industry as the â€Å"king of hoteliers and hotelier to kings. † Mr. Ritz redefined luxury accommodation in Europe with his management of The Ritz in Paris and The Carlton in London. Although he died in 1918, his wife Marie continued the tradition of opening hotels in his name. The Ritz-Carlton Investing Company was established by Albert Keller, who bought and franchised the name in the United States. The original Ritz-Carlton hotel was built in Boston, Massachusetts, and opened on May 19, 1927 with a room rate of $15 per night. It became known as the hotel to kings, queens, movie stars, and tycoons: Prince Charles, Irving Berlin, Bette Davis, and Howard Hughes were just a few of its notable guests. Additional locations soon opened in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlantic City and Boca Raton, but all these locations did not survive the Great Depression and by 1940 only The Ritz-Carlton Boston remained. The Wyner Years: 1927-1964 On October 1926, 29-year-old Edward N. Wyner bought a third-acre parcel at the corner of Arlington and Newbury streets and formed a partnership called The Ritz-Arlington Trust with his father, George, and business associate, John S.Slater. The trust sold $2. 1 million of bonds to finance the construction of a hotel to be called the Mayflower. The 18-story, 201-foot brick building, designed by Strickland, Blodget & Law Architects, was far taller than anything else along Newbury Street at the time. Construction had started on the second floor when Wyner was persuaded by then-Mayor James Michael Curly to make the Mayflower a world-class, 300-room Ritz-Carlton Hotel, which opened May 19, 1927. Room rates were $5 to $15 per night; $40 per night for suites. After a hugely successful opening, the stock market crash of 1929 and ensuing Depression brought financial difficulties. The Wyner family funded the hotel’s operating loss es during the early 1930s, although the interest on the bonds went unpaid. Still in 1933, when only 30 guests were registered in the hotel, Wyner turned on the lights in every guest room to give the appearance the hotel was full. Wyner died of a heart attack on Dec. 5, 1961. His six sons tried to continue operation of the hotel, but it was too difficult, and a decision was made to sell. The Blakeley Years: 1964-1983 The unpaid interest on the bonds dissuaded many from trying to buy the hotel. But Cabot, Cabot & Forbes principal Gerald F. Blakeley Jr. was interested. After more than a year of legal work, Hale and Dorr succeeded at clearing the bond obligations, and in October 1964 Blakeley and associates Paul Hellmuth and Charles Spaulding acquired the Ritz-Carlton Boston for $3. 8 million. â€Å"Out of the 20 years I owned it, it made money three years. The other years it broke even, but from a public relations standpoint for CC&F, it was a tremendous asset,† said Blakeley, wh o completed a 19-story Ritz-Carlton luxury condominium complex on land adjacent to the hotel in 1981.In the late 1960s Blakeley obtained the rights to the Ritz-Carlton name in North America (with the exception of Montreal and New York). In June 1978, Blakeley was awarded the rights and privileges of the Ritz-Carlton trademark in the United States and was given a US Service Mark Registration. In August 1983, Johnson Properties bought the Ritz Boston and US trademark for $75. 5 million and established the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. In 1988, Johnson subsequently obtained the exclusive rights to the Ritz name throughout the world (except for the 210-room Hotel-Ritz Paris and the Ritz-Carlton in Montreal). The Corporate Years: 1983-1999 Johnson grew the company from the One Ritz-Carlton Boston to 30 hotels worldwide in just 10 years. He obtained financing to do so from Manufacturers Hanover Trust of New York in 1983 in the amount of $85 million secured by the Ritz-Carlton Boston. This loan wa s refinanced in 1989 by Manhattan Tops USA of New York for $136. 5 million and again in 1994 by Sumitomo Bank of Japan. By 1996, this mortgage was in default and the interest and penalties brought the total debt to $214. 8 million.By splitting this mortgage note into three parts, Sumitomo Bank was able to unbundle the Ritz Boston from the trademark rights to the Ritz brand worldwide. Blackstone Real Estate Acquisitions of New York bought the Ritz-Carlton Boston at auction for $75 million in February 1998. A month later, Host Marriott Corp. of Bethesda, Maryland, acquired the hotel from Blackstone for $100 million. Marriott International Inc. , which franchises and manages Marriott’s 325,000 rooms, bought the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. and rights to the Ritz-Carlton name worldwide from W. B. Johnson for $290 million in a two-part transaction completed in 1998.Millenium Purchase In 1998, Christopher Jeffries, founding partner of Millennium Partners, obtained Ritz franchises from Ma rriott for four hotel properties under construction: two in Washington, one in New York City, and one in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, Jeffries was searching for a brand affiliation for the new 155-room hotel and 270-luxury condominiums he was constructing as part of Boston’s 1. 8 million-square-foot Millennium Place, a mixed-use complex on lower Washington Street. Because of noncompetition clauses, the only way he could obtain a second Ritz flag in Boston was to own the existing Ritz.Millennium Partners acquired the original Ritz-Carlton Boston for $122 million (though it had sold for just $75 million less than two years prior) and spent $50 million for renovations. Marriott agreed to allow the Ritz affiliation for the condominium complex, which will be known as The Residences at the Ritz-Carlton, and share all of the services of the hotel. In 1999, when Millennium Partners of New York, the new owners of the original Ritz-Carlton Boston, announced that the company was build ing a second Ritz-Carlton in Boston (the now-completed 193-room Ritz-Carlton, Boston Commons), there was much local disapproval.A member of the old guard summed up: â€Å"The movement of a name from one place to another doesn’t do it. There would never be that special atmosphere; a grace, decency, and ambiance that once existed. † Millennium Partners admitted they had no intentions of trying to duplicate the Ritz. Taj Purchase In October 2002, The Ritz-Carlton Boston celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a major restoration to bring the facility 21st century amenities while maintaining its 20th century decor. The Ritz-Carlton Boston has been in continuous operation since it opened in 1927.The property is a Boston landmark and anchors fashionable Newbury Street and the picturesque Boston Public Garden located in the heart of the Back Bay. In November 2006, The Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, subsidiary of the India-based Tata Group, entered into a definitive agreement to purchase The Ritz-Carlton Boston from its current owners, Millennium Partners. The $170 million transaction is scheduled to close on January 11, 2007. Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces operates 75 hotels across the world. The Ritz-Carlton Boston will be renamed the Taj Boston upon closing the purchase. The existing Ritz-Carlton Boston Common is expected to be renamed Ritz-Carlton Boston. 2000 and beyond From 2001 to 2007 Boston was home to two Ritz-Carlton hotels that faced each other on Boston Common. The Ritz-Carlton Boston Common Hotel opened in 2001. In November 2006 The Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, India luxury hotel group entered into an agreement to purchase the original 1927 Ritz-Carlton Boston from its current owners, Millennium Partners, for $170 Million. The Ritz-Carlton name was not sold to Taj Hotels. The Ritz-Carlton Boston was renamed Taj Boston on Jan. 11, 2007. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC has announced its first hotel in India. The property is slated to open in Bangalore in 2007. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company In 1983, the original hotel and the brand were sold to The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L. L. C. , based in Atlanta, Georgia which began expansion of the brand to other locations. The company grew to become the hospitality leader in the US under the leadership of Horst Schulze. His strong conviction of customer loyalty and emphasis on a value/mission driven philosophy for the â€Å"Ladies and Gentleman serving Ladies and Gentleman† became a benchmark in the industry that other companies aspired yet never reached. In 1995, Marriott International purchased a 49% stake in The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and in 1998 purchased an additional 50% stake in the company giving it 99% ownership of the company. The company is now headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, located in the Washington, D. C. MSA.The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company partnered with Bulgari in 2001 to operate a chain of hotels owned by and operated under the Bulgari bran d. Simon Cooper joined Ritz-Carlton in 2001 as President and Chief Operating Officer taking the helm from Horst Schulze. Cooper's mandate was to grow the chain through hotel expansion and product diversification. Under Cooper's watch the company has aggressively expanded its hotels and has added The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton (private residential units) as well as The Ritz-Carlton Club (fractional ownership residences) to the company's new development program.

Lather and Nothing Else and the Possibility of Evil

British Baptist Preacher Charles Spurgeon once said, â€Å"Beware of no man more than of yourself; we carry our worst enemies within us. † By reading â€Å"Lather and Nothing Else,† â€Å"The Possibility of Evil† and through one’s one personal struggles this quote is found to be true. Everyone faces struggles with themselves. It is yourself that is your own enemy because your mind is what creates your fears, goals and weaknesses not someone else. The story â€Å"Lather and Nothing Else† talks about a barber who must decide to be either a hero or a murderer. The Possibility of Evil† deals with the evil that lies beneath the peaceful surface of a small town. In both stories topics including integrity, honesty, morals, values and work ethic are dealt with Characters in both stories encounter struggle or conflict, but something is learned through this struggle. First of all, the story â€Å"Lather and Nothing Else† deals with inner struggle . The main character, the barber, is secretly a member of the resistance against the government. The conflict is introduced when Captain Torres, an executioner, walks into the barber’s shop to get shaved. That gives the barber an opportunity to kill him and become a hero. The main character then becomes very conflicted. If he decides to kill Cpt. Torres he could escape to another country, but he would still have to live with the fact that he killed someone and that feeling would haunt him for the rest of his life. The barber debated the situation in his head. Perhaps he believed killing someone would lower himself to the captain’s level. The main character came to the decision that he would not kill the captain. The barber believed he did his work honorably and didn’t want to stain his hands with blood. To each his own. That’s the way it is. To each his own. † The lesson the author intends the readers to learn is to always weigh out the pros and cons before making a difficult choice in life. Next, â€Å"The Possibility of Evil† demonstrates the sense of morality very well. Mrs. Strangeworth is an elderly lady who lives in Pleasant Town. She had lived there for a long time and believed it was her job to protect her town. She wrote anonymous letters to people spreading false rumors and wrote about people’s flaws and sent them to different citizens of that town. She believed that by sending these letters she was getting rid of the evil in her town. The struggles in this story is person vs. society because one can tell by reading this story that deep down in that old lady’s heart, she loathed the people in her town. She dealt with her struggle by writing secret letters about people and posting them. In the end her most prized possessions, her roses, were destroyed by a man after finding out she was the one sending the letters. The lesson readers take away from this story is what goes around comes around, any actions, good or bad, will have a consequence. Finally, I, myself, have gone through many struggles throughout my life. One of my biggest struggles is when I spent three weeks living on a military base. I only got a chance to leave the base once and that was to do community service but I still had to wear my combat uniform. They woke us up at 5:00 AM every morning, taken for a one hour jog and trained until 6:30 in the evening. We got a 1. 5 hour break and had to be back in our barracks by 9:00 PM. We would then polish our boots for a half hour then went to bed. They would play The Last Post at 10 PM every night and â€Å"Reveille† on the bugle every morning at 5. I struggled a lot with the schedule, home sickness and during a injury to my ankle from a Biathlon I competed in. I was so fed up with everything and just wanted to go home. I got through it because of all the amazing people that were there. The girls I shared a room with were all used to this because they have done it before. They really talked me through it and took me around the base and made it fun for me. The officers, padres and doctors there were also really supportive. There was always someone there for me to talk to. The people I met there ended up becoming my second family. I believe the lesson I learned from that experience is that it doesn’t matter who you are with or where you may be, there really is no place at home. In conclusion, as to what was stated in the introduction, everyone faces struggles with themselves. In â€Å"Lather and Nothing Else† the barber struggles with himself, he doesn’t want to be a killer but killing Captain Torres could potentially save many other lives. In â€Å"The Possibility of Evil† the ain conflict I person vs. society, however, the woman also struggles with herself. She hated the people in her town and dealt with it by sending anonymous letters to citizens about their flaws or accused them of things they may not be guilty for. In a way, she’s destroying her own town by breaking the reliance people have in each other. Also, in my own struggle I was homesick and confused. I dea lt with situation I never would have imagined beforehand. As one can see, lessons were learned through struggles by both characters in these stories and through my own experiences.

An Incident That Made Me Believe in Fate!!!

An Incident That Made Me Believe In FATE!!! I am choosing that free will exists in our world. I think that I make my own choices every day, but I know that God definitely helps me along the way. Every day I wake up, and I make a decision, should I go back to sleep, lie here looking at the walls, or should I get out of bed and go to class? My story takes place before I was a teenager; I would have to flashback twenty years. What is faith? Is it belief in one’s God? How does one find faith? Can someone that claims to have faith ever doubt? When I was twelve years old, I thought that I was religious. I went to a function with my youth group. In attendance were a great number of kids, I felt lost in the shuffle with so many things going on. Just as I contemplated to sneak away, a boy came over to talk to me, â€Å"How thoughtful,† I said to myself. We sat for a very long time and read the Bible together. It made me feel so special, like I was starting to belong to the group. I felt it was so wonderful that someone took the time to notice me. This experience had a very special meaning to me. One of the most important aspects of teenage life is feeling secure, accepted, and loved. At that moment I felt all those things at one time. My preacher came over to talk with me and wondered why I was sitting all alone. I looked up and realized I was alone. I told her about the boy who had noticed me. We read the bible together, and we talked for hours. She helped me look for him and we couldn’t find him anywhere. I was devastated and had no idea where he could have gone. I had been looking all weekend for the boy who noticed me, only I still couldn’t find him anywhere. That’s when I realized that this was awesome. I know what it is: It is fate or faith? Here I am at a Christian event, and to think I was visited by the Lord. I told the preacher that, and she told me that I need to tell everyone the account of what happened. So there I was, standing in front of this group of kids. I was so anxious, but also calm. The story just flowed out of me. I told everyone what exactly happened to me this weekend. Whether individuals believe in God or not, a person must have a reason for his or her belief. I think fate has dealt me with a wonderful reason to believe in God!!!

Awareness of Censorship Moment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Awareness of Censorship Moment - Essay Example It is as if they are treating the people as horses by putting blinders so that they can only look one way. They think that by doing this they are exposing the people to just the positive views on the state or government, when in fact, they are inciting anger within the community because they are taking away the people’s freedom to decide for themselves what they want to believe in and support. This is what I think censorship means, although I was still very young when the government was still applying censorship tactics on television. I grew up with unrestricting parents and so I was able to watch whatever I wanted, provided of course, that there was no nudity or portrayals of sex. And so, I did not really experience what it was like to encounter censored materials. However, I experienced censorship firsthand just a few years back. In the summer of 2006, like any other teenager, I was always on the internet—just surfing and downloading games and songs. Nicholas Cage is one of my favorite actors and the movie he did then that was to be released in the next couple of months was â€Å"World Trade Center,† which depicted what happened during the September 11 Terrorist attacks and how the last men that were pulled out alive from the rubble of the building survived. Of course, I know about September 11 and how it caused a negative view on Islam. Nevertheless, I still tried to research further so that I will be able to better understand what happened because I was just 12 years old on that tragic day. So, I entered ‘September 11 attacks’ on Google and it gave me thousands of hits. I was able to surf and open websites until it came to a particular one about Islam and how extreme its followers’ views are. When I clicked on the link to open the page, preparing myself to be shocked at how our religion was being portrayed just because some extremists decided to go on a suicide mission and kill
